Sussex County Readdressing Project has finished their survey of Middlesex Beach, and phoned us with the results. Then called again 2 days later with more information. Considering some of the possibilities we've considered, their findings are quite tame. Since Middlesex Beach is a subdivision with an incorporated Property Owner's Association, and since our existing numbering was recorded on the plat in Georgetown, DE in 1959, Sussex County prefers to not change things if at all possible.

They were not concerned with the fact that there is also a Dune Road in Tower Shores (just south of the Indian River Inlet), with Bethany Beach, DE 19930 addresses which overlap ours. They have some method of coding us as Dune Road, Middlesex Beach in their system. (What this means as far as MapQuest and others thinking we have a "South Dune Road", or Grotto's propensity to delivery our pizzas to the Tower Shores community, is unknown.)

CHANGE 1: For the most part, our house numbering scheme is acceptable, so most properties will be permitted to keep their existing 1 or 2 digit address. The exception is the pineside portion of Evergreen Road, which has Town of South Bethany properties on the south side (with low numbers towards the east) and Middlesex Beach properties on the north side (with low numbers towards the west). Sussex County will renumber this portion of Evergreen Road, so that 29 Evergreen will be renumbered 111 Evergreen Road (112 is more or less across the road), on down the road to current 1 Evergreen, which will be renumbered 139. This renumbering change would affect a total of 15 properties.

CHANGE 2: most of the east/west roads in the community are NOT continuous, so Sussex County is requiring the 2 portions of each road to have unique names. Bridge Road is continuous, so it will not be affected. Clearly, the number of properties on the pine side of each road is more than the number of properties on the beach side of each road, so any change should be made on the beach side.

Suggestions include "Addy Road Extended" (their suggestion) and "East Addy Road" (my immediate suggestion). "Addy STREET" would NOT be acceptable. Other options include "Addy Road East", "Addy Beach Road", or "Addy Sand Road". Or "Water Road". (Maybe we could sell the naming rights...McDonald Way...) Most our current road names came from those who owned the property before it became the MBA. However, some land was also previously owned by members of the Hall, Lighthipe, Drexler, Hudson, Hopkins, Roth, and Hourdequin families- maybe it's time some of them were honored.

This road naming change affects 4 properties on each of Evergreen, Errett, Addy and Bayberry Roads, and 2 on Short Road-a total of 18 properties. The decision will be made by the Board based on input from the affected properties (again-not Dune or Bridge Roads). Click here to register your input online. We feel that whatever change is made should apply to ALL roads: for example, the word "East" should be added at the beginning of ALL 5 road names. Or ALL 5 roads should get entirely different names. Or whatever.

The commercial properties (which we have traditionally listed using addresses on the street BEHIND them-Beach Plum Road) will be listed with addresses along Rt 1, which will generally continue the numbering scheme from the Town of Bethany. On the one hand, they want addresses which reflect where a business's ACCESS DRIVEWAY is located, but on the other hand, they recognize that many businesses cannot be found this way. They had no clear cut answer for commercial buildings which contain multiple businesses (for example: consecutive numbers, identical number with a suite letter), especially if one of the multiple businesses would appear to be located on a side street (for example-DeMarie Real Estate on Bayberry Road).

And, being a private community, we get to pay for the new road signs ourselves.
