Open letter from Mayor Olmsted of Bethany Beach:
The Town of Bethany Beach has aggressively sought and supported the massive beach replenishment project that is now being constructed on our beach. Although we continue to support the Delaware Department of Natural Resources in seeking this project and the Army Corp of Engineers for recognizing the need for this replenishment, we have also heard the concerns of many of our citizens regarding the height of the dune and the obstruction of beach view from our boardwalk. State officials have been apprised of our concerns and agree that asking the Army Corp of Engineers to reduce the height of the dune by two feet might still afford the necessary protection of life and property the Corp requires in a project of this nature, while possibly facilitating a better view of the ocean. To that end the Delaware Department of Natural Resources has officially asked the Army Corp of Engineers to reduce the height of the dune from the current 16 feet to 14 feet. Ultimately the decision to reduce the dune height rests with the Army Corp of Engineers and this reduction request will require a substantive review of the project before the Corp issues any decision. This decision may not occur until later in the project. The Town while continuing to support the project will also continue to advocate appropriately for a reduction in dune height and will keep its citizens apprised as it becomes aware of any new information.
