  • 2007 MIDDLESEX BEACH PATROL

Captain of the Middlesex Beach Patrol (and new father) Colin Crandell will be starting his 12th season on the MBP; he is a former All-American swimmer at Division II Shippensburg University, former swim team captain at Shippensburg University, and a former collegiate coach at Slippery Rock University. In addition to working on the MBP, he has worked for Sea Colony and Rehoboth during past Septembers and in Boca Raton, FL during the entire "offseason" of 2002-2003.

Before he started guarding at the beach, he was a supervisor at Parker Dam State Park in Pennsylvania. During the offseason, Colin teaches 8th grade Science; he has a graduate degree in Athletic Administration from Slippery Rock University, and did undergraduate work in Earth/Space Sciences and Secondary Education at Shippensburg University.

Other guards for this summer include these returning members of the 2006 staff:

Grant Hastings: Junior at Dickinson University, 6th season, Tight End on Dickinson's football team. Grant is first in command when Colin is not present. He is an excellent guy with incredible character and leadership qualities.

Conor McMullen: Junior at Mary Washington University, 5th season. Conor is a music major and a strong runner in lifeguard competitions. His experience will add to the training of younger guards.

Aaron Bell: Graduate school at Ohio University (undergraduate at Clarion), 4th Season, All American swimmer at Clarion, just missed Olympic cuts, currently ooking to coach colliegately after two seasons as Ohio University’s Asst. Coach.

Cory Ciekot: recently accepted into the United States Coast guard, Cory will be helping out primarily on weekends this summer as he enters his 4th season with MBP. He’s a dedicated guard.

Jeff Kilner: Senior at Clarion University, 4th season. He’s finishing up his teaching degree and looks to teach abroad this fall. Jeff is another guard who shows great leadership qualities and dedication to MBP.

Matt Lukach: Junior at George Washington University, 3rd season. Matt helps run the Jr. lifeguard program and defines the character upon which this patrol is built.

Lauren Kalata: Senior at Clarion University; NCAA qualifier in Division II swimming, 2nd season. Lauren finished up her student teaching this spring and looks to enter the teaching field this fall.

Tyler Hastings: Will be a sophmore at Tulane University, 3rd season. Grew up in the Bethany Beach area and is a product of our Jr. Lifeguard program. Tyler shows great promise to become one of our future leaders.

Meg Smith: Senior at University of Maryland, 3rd season. Meg also helps run the Jr. lifeguard program.

Charlie Sparks: Sophomore at University of Ohio (Athens). He specializes in distance swimming, and swam the mile in 15:46 this season. Charlie won every distance swim offered last summer. He looks to continue his streak and add experience to the patrol.

Todd Brock- Todd was added to our roster late last summer. A former minor league baseball player and current computer teacher at Sussex high school, Todd brings age, experience, and athleticism. Todd will be part time, working 3- 4 days per week.

New to the MBP this year are:

Rebecca Trosch- Junior at Dickinson University. Becca is an extremely good runner and all around athlete. She currently runs for Dickinson and has won many local races. She’s got great spirit and should add to our depth.

Lindsay Guenter- Junior at Penn State University. Lindsay is a cross country and track runner at Penn State. She was a notable swimmer is high school ( area of Reading, Pa) and should add to the strengths of our patrol.

Chris Jones- Chris is a former swimmer at Clarion University. Chris swam the sprint freestyle events. Last summer Chris spent his days as a US Postal worker. He decided his time would be better spent tapping into his talents as a swimmer and guarding for MBP.

Tommy Glasgow- Tommy is a local resident in Middlesex beach. He has spent his entire life on our coastline and many years in the Jr. lifeguarding program. We are very happy to finally have Tommy on our squad and doing what he does best.

Helping out on occasion this year is:

Chris Adams, who is a professional fireman in Prince William County, Virginia and helps us on the weekends through the summer. It will be his 9th summer at MBP. He swam at University of Maryland and was part of the first place National Lifeguarding sprint-run team in 2002.

Please take a brief moment during the summer to thank them for giving us their talents and expertise to make Middlesex Beach the safest beach in the area.
