BEACH COMMITTEE REPORT
MIDDLESEX BEACH ASSOCIATION September 4, 2005 David Taylor, Chairman We are delighted to have the opportunity to share the news that our beach has had yet another safe, successful season. Colin Crandell continues to instill the philosophy of preventative lifeguarding. The philosophy that Geof Myers certainly had brought to Middlesex is clearly upheld and carried on by Colin and his staff for the benefit of all of our residents and guests. This season there were approximately 40 saves, mostly children. This was a mild summer. Injuries included ankles, two dislocated shoulders, a broken collarbone and a spinal injury scare that were all referred to Beebe. It is important to note that these results appear quite favorable when compared to our surrounding beaches, in part due to our excellent beach staff. Additional factors for the other beaches were crowded conditions and beach replenishment left a hard, coarse surface with more dangerous shorebreak. (It may also be worth noting that our staff emphasis on prevention may play a huge roll in this result. Other staff philosophies may involve “reactionary approaches” vs. prevention.) We experienced roughly 3 red flag days and 10 yellow flag days. The total staff including Mr. Crandell was comprised of 15 guards to handle both Middlesex and Indian 7 days a week. This past week presented a challenge due to college start up, some as early as mid August, however yesterday Middlesex had 6 guards on duty. It is anticipated that only 4 new hires will be required for next season. (Colin will check at Thanksgiving and at New Years to monitor return staffing status). Please take the opportunity to congratulate the lifeguards on their successful representation of Middlesex while competing in all the local competitions. Bearing in mind that three local beaches have over 60 guards each to draw from, these were some of the results:
A staff thats selection criterion has emphasis on character and personal qualities over swimming and athleticism accomplished these results. It is interesting to note that in the components of the competitions that involved the water, Middlesex excelled. It is comforting to know we have these fine people representing Middlesex Beach and more importantly, looking after our safety on the beach. Please congratulate them. A few quick notes on beach issues: Picnics were successful and very informative. They resulted in happier, more informed children and parents. Beach pass checking procedures are being defined, refined and communicated for next season. Skim Boarding – At the discretion of lifeguard at all times AND minimum 100’ from swimmers left and right. The summer housing for guards appears to have been successful. Although it presents some challenges to manage, it is a significant help in attracting quality guards and has gone smoothly so far this season. Although many families contribute time and resources to Middlesex Beach, in terms of the guard staff this year it is important to thank both The Glasgow Family and Kathy Murphy & Family for their generosity. In addition the Harris Family (Chelsea’s parents) and the Ciekot Family (Cory’s parents) for helping along the way. |
