In the early-1990's, the MBA Board decided that the existing collection of piling stumps and weeds was not sufficient as a first line of defense against tresspassers on our private beach.

They decided to install a fence along the east side of Route 1. In order to avoid using DelDOT property, easements were obtained from most property owners along this stretch. The fence was ultimately constructed, with locking gates at each street. Due to its proximity to the curve in the highway and poor sight distances for pedestrians, the gate at Short Road was later sealed off.

On the highway side of this fence, any trees or shrubs are naturally occurring. On the beach side of this fence, many plants were removed when Artesian Water ran their pipes throughout the community in the late 1990's.

For the most part, this fence is in serviceable condition. Occasionally sections become damaged; this photo was taken after a September 2006 storm. The fence was patched together using spare lumber from the President's garage.
Certainly all the gates and locks get some wear and tear. The gate at Addy Road was replaced in 2007, and the one at Errett was replaced in 2006.

In November 2008, one of the hinges came loose from the E. Evergreen Rd gate, and our property manager took it away for repair.
In mid-December, before the gate was returned, MBA received a request for a building permit for 32 E. Evergreen. The owners wished to build a new home, and sell their existing house to someone who would move it inland. To do so, they would need to remove the existing fence at the end of Evergreen, and would replace it.

MBA agreed to pay for new materials for this opening, to be installed by the moving company. Additionally, since the southern 50' of the approximately 150' deep lot had never been fenced during the 1970's due to the thick vegetation, MBA decided to use some of the traditional Capital Improvements Fund end-of-year balance.
