  • General Description
This road's drainage system is unique in Middlesex Beach, because the ditches on the opposites of the street are connected togoether via a culvert pipe under the road near #1 and #6 Bridge. This pipe is nearly level, and is at an elevation of 2.25'. Water in the south ditch then exits the community via a pipe under Pine Road extended. While this pipe is clear of debris, it does have an upward slope of about 3". However, there is an incredible amount of phone and other wiring on top of the pipe, so replacing it would be rather expensive.

This water crosses to the north and west of the Bayside Tennis Club, and eventually makes its way to the wetlands adjacent the Assawoman Canal.

Unfortunately, the elevation of this exit pipe is approximately one foot higher than the corresponding exit pipe at the end of Addy Road.

    Past work
In September 2006, two large cleanout boxes were installed at opposite ends of the above-noted under-road pipe. The box on the south side of the road connects to approximately 300' of buried pipe that leads towards Pine Road, and also to approximately 100' of pipe that connects to the open ditch along the south side of Bridge Road.

The box on the north side of the road connects to approximately 120' of buried pipe that connects to the open ditch along the north side of Bridge Road, and also to a shorter section that leads towards the substation.

In subsequent months, work proceeded along the north side of the road. Along the south side of the road, difficulties were encountered with an underground power line running along the driveway at #12 Bridge (preventing the new culvert from being installed as low as we wished), and with the low level of the lot at #14 Bridge. This, combined with the higher elevation of the pipe that exits the community, have caused problems.
The buried pipe along the south side of Bridge empties into an open pit just west of our Kent Ave fence before passing thru the exit pipe. If necessary, a pump could be installed in this pit to drain water from the Bridge Road ditch and buried pipe system.

On the north side, the level of the grass shoulder adjacent the first speed hump used to prevent water from reaching the drainage ditch. This actually contributes to the standing water on a portion of Beach Plum Road behind the Dollar General store. This ground was regraded, and some bushes on MBA property were removed.

January 2012 Work The culvert at #12 was leveled, and the culvert at #14 was lowered. This should eliminate the need to redo the culvert at #16, which the homeowner has recently covered with an asphalt driveway.

The small hump in the ditch between the driveways at #12 and #14, has been removed. No work will be done on the uphill part of the south side of Bridge until this fix is evaluated.

    Future Work
North side: verify existing culverts at upper end are OK; likely no work needed.
South side: lower ditch betw #14 and #18; replace culverts #18 upwards.
