  • Tweaking Bridge Road
The entire width of MBA's property along Bridge Road was freshly paved in mid-December 2011-from the curb at the south side (adjacent the new Gallo building) to the edge of our property where it blends into the Dollar General parking lot.

Before winter is over, a barrier of some sort will be installed on the south side, leaving about 7' in width for the walkway area. The original plan was to reinstall a post/rail fence (there were some sections of post/rail fence in place here for about 3 years).

Note that the emergency exit from the Gallo parking lot onto Bridge Road must be accessible FOR EMERGENCY USE ONLY. It will NOT be usable for normal vehicular access.
The Community Facilities Committee and the Beautification Committee met onsite on December 31 and agreed that some sort of 3 dimensional structure would be needed to separate the walkway from the roadway. This will extend nearly the entire length of this block.

A sturdier barrier design in use at Sea Colony was recently brought to our attention (see photo at left). A search of the internet revealed several municipalities use very similar (although not quite as sturdy) sidewalk barrier designs.

To block off the parking lot from the walkway, 5 flexible guide posts (similar to what had been present along the walkway for 5 years) will be installed at the emergency driveway entrance. Although other colors will be considered, the fact that we have a healthy supply of orange ones may sway the decision.
Also discussed was the bank of mailboxes for the occupants of the Gallo building, which would be inaccessible to postal vehicles if the full length barrier was installed.

This led to a conversation with the Bethany Postmaster, who revealed that, while it would be OK with them to move these mailboxes so that they are on Coastal Highway (adjacent the Long and Foster Rental mailbox), in reality the USPS does NOT want ANY mailboxes along Coastal Highway for numerous safety reasons-their own drivers, and also bicyclists and pedestrians who try to get around the postal vehicles. This has led us to examine the locations of ALL the commercial mailboxes, and whether they could be relocated to Beach Plum Road.

    Nothing is ever simple...
And then there's the other side of the road. Adjacent Dollar General, we would like to bring some order to the traffic flow. A plan similar to that depicted at left will be discussed with Jack Burbage. Traffic in front of Dollar General would be one way northbound. Vehicles parking along the side of Dollar General would be encouraged to drive towards the back of the building, and access Bridge Rd only near the rear of the lot adjacent the dumpster enclosures.
